The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was established in 2005 to work and take care of disaster hit areas.
During the last 10 years, however, NDMA has badly failed in this particular task and has proved to be a white elephant.
In the current crisis after the devastating flash floods in Chitral and other parts of KP, the NDMA and its provincial chapter, the PDMA, again failed in providing relief to the affected people.
In the worst affected district of Chitral, NDMA provided bags of spoiled and rotten wheat flour which was injurious to human health.
Natural calamities demand rapid response whereas NDMA has highly centralized bureaucratic system in which even the issuance of a single tent needs 10 days of paper work. More shocking aspect of the story is that the NDMA discourages donor community to work with the community-based organizations and seeks funding for itself which never reach the target population.
It is high time that NAB is mobilized against NDMA and this white elephant is dissolved without further delay. The resources should be placed at the disposal of additional chief secretary and relevant commissions of the province.
