CHITRAL: Young activists of the ruling PTI Chitral on Wednesday accused a local government department official of embezzling over Rs.16 million on the pretext of supplying dustbins and shopping bags to village councils.

Addressing a press conference, the youth under the banner of their “Corruption Free Chitral Movement” said last year Fahim Jalal, an assistant director of the local government department, collected Rs160,000 from each of the 100 village council nazims across Chitral for providing them dustbins and biodegradable shopping bags.

The convener of the movement Muhammad Haroon along with Muhammad Adil, Abdul Rehman, Zar Bahar, Rahimullah, Shafiqul Azam, Mehboob Rehman and others said only five of the village councils were provided some dustbins and a few hundreds shopping bags which were worth only twenty to thirty thousands rupees.

Moreover, legal formalities in the purchase of the shopping bags and dustbins were not followed. They said the assistant director should explain where the amount collected from the village councils was spent, was there any any tender floated for the purchase of the items and who was awarded the contract for the  supply of these items.

They demanded that the prime minister and chief minister of KP should order an investigation into what they termed a mega corruption committed by some people in connivance with the assistant director of the local government department.
