CHITRAL: A group of people here on Monday said former governor Gilgit-Baltistan Pir Syed Karam Ali Shah’s claim of ownership on 800 kanals in Qaqlasht area is wrong and he should be stopped from launching a housing scheme there.

Addressing a press conference, Aftab Mohammad Tahir, Altaf Ahmed Adv, Ghulam Mustafa Adv, village council nazim Shotkhar Minhajuddin, Nabeg Adv, Jamshed Ahmed and Khair Rehman called upon the government to stop Pir Karam from what they said  illegally selling plots to the local people.

They said Qaqlasht had for generations been the common land (Shamilat) of Torkhow, Mulkhow, Booni, Junalikoch and union council Charun.

Under the 1975 notification, the locals accepted Qaqlasht as shamilat so that the nearby people could utilize it equally.

They said the former governor of Gilgit-Baltistan has recently started occupying the land by “tampering the record of the judicial council.”

They said Pir Karam had referred to a document in the archives library Peshawar but the library issued a letter stating that there was no such record showing his ownership on the land.

They said the deputy commissioner Upper Chitral and the officials of land settlement department should take timely action to stop occupation of the land.

Sources told ChitralToday that Pir Karam owns a large chunk of land in Junalicoch near Qaqlasht, Upper Chitral.

He also claims ownership on the land located on the right side of the Chitral-Mastuj road, including the college area.
