What we experience in day-to-day life is education. We hear the word education and standard education from educated people in multiple elucidations but majority may likely face a difficult perspective in answering if asked to specifically define education.
We still hardly ponder on getting around what the word purposefully stands for. We are on the drive of education, seeking it with its simple meaning but the sane people knowing it. Education without understanding its true meaning is nothing but just disturbing and killing one’s own mind and time.
The word education is derived from a Latin word which means to ‘lead forth’ or ‘raise up’ with a purpose to train and educate the learners. From this we take a gist that education makes leaders in which the educator guides others’ to build the character, behavior, discipline and constructs information, knowledge and understanding. Educated person is one who explores the universe, follows code of ethics having altruistic and humanitarian mindset living like the civilized people of the world.
The answer of the very purpose of education can be extracted clearly from the short statement of Mohammad Ali Jinnah while addressing ‘All Pakistan Educational Conference’ on November 27, 1947 at Karachi said that “Education does not merely mean academic education, even that appears to be a poor type, what we have to do is to mobilize our people and build up the character of our future generation.’’
Receiving a degree from university is not education in true sense. It has no benefit unless taking humanity all along towards the destination for achieving the set targets-excellence in understanding and character, and leading the future generation for greater outcome in national building. That is what the real education which not only brings quality in learning and helps to bring positive change in society.
An American educationist and philosopher John Dewey who taught at the University of Chicago and Columbia explaining the query how to get and the way of education to be sought said that “It is the very nature of life to strive to continue in being. Since this continuance can be secured only by constant renewals, life is a self-renewing process. What nutrition and reproduction are to physiological life, education is to social life. This education primarily consists in transmission through communication. Communication is a process of sharing experience till it becomes a common possession…A community or social group sustains itself through continuous self-renewal, and this renewal takes place by means of educational growth of the immature members of the group. By various agencies, unintentional and designed, a society transforms uninitiated and seemingly alien being into robust trustees of its own resources and ideals. Education is thus fostering and nurturing, a cultivating process.”
This is what the great educationist has underlined, is the real meaning, the way and the purpose of education. We must now to be the educated one to raise the head of the nation up with Pride by contributing in its development. It is also important to be a conscientious citizen and be the member of civilized nation. Our forte and hallmark were to be identified with qualities of good character, behavior, understanding, knowledge and citizenship.
