ARANDU: The opening of the customs check post on the border of Afghanistan in Aranu will usher in a new era of development and prosperity not only for the remote and backward Arandu but also for whole Chitral.
This was stated by collector customs Peshawar Ehsan Ali Shah while addressing a gathering of local people in connection with the formal opening of the check post here. He said a notification had already been issued and the customs check post would be formally inaugurated very soon.
It may be noted that the government has made arrangements to open the Arandu and Shah Salim customs check posts in Chitral to promote trade with Afghanistan as well as Central Asian countries.
The customs official said that people of Chitral would have vast opportunities of trans-border legal trade with the opening of the new routes. He said with the opening of the border trade, agricultural products would also pay more dividends in terms of export.
He told the locals that during the times of war in the neighbouring country, you paid the prices and now time was up to reap the benefit in the shape of trans-border legal trade.
Speaking on the occasion, Chitral Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Sartaj Ahmed Khan said Chitral was gifted with the treasures of water and other natural resources but so far no steps had been taken to exploit them for the development of the area.
He said for the last over five years he had been making efforts to open the Arandu and Shah Salim border with Afghanistan to promote trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian nations.
He said with the opening of the check posts, the fate of the areas would change, adding there was also a need to open a dry port in Arandu.
