There is a question mark on the future of leady health workers recruited in 1994-95 under the government’s National Health Program. As many as 14,000 LHWs and LHSs were recruited for the population welfare activities, vaccination programs and polio drop campaigns. They are paid Rs266/per day in 2015.
There is a Supreme Court degree to regularize their services and subsequent notification of the government for giving pay scales 5 and 7 to the LHWs and LHSs respectively. The government, however, has failed to implement the notification of 2012 in the past three years.
Now the government is trying tricks to drive the polio vaccine campaigns through the class-IV employees such as sweepers, peons, drivers and ward orderlies, and thus it seems bent upon closing the 21-year-old National Health Program. In case it happens, it will bring a bad name to the government and the donor community will not accept such a move.
