PESHAWAR: A large number of people from Chitral held a protest outside Peshawar Press Club against the district administration of Upper Chitral for ordering the arrest of social and political activist Muhammad Pervez Lal under MPO.
The protesters were led by former PPP minister Salim Khan and head of Tanzeem Huqooq Chitral Pir Mukhtar.
The participants were carrying banners and chanting slogans.
The protesters said the district administration of Upper Chitral used section 3 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance without any justification.
They said Pervez Lal, a political and social activist, had taken part in a protest against the government for its failure to come to the help of the flood-affected people of Reshun.
But the district administration of Upper Chitral misused the law and ordered the shifting of Pervez Lal to DI Khan jail for one month.
They said putting someone in jail just for using their democratic right and raising a voice for the people was not a crime.
By singling out Pervez Lal and ordering his shifting to a jail in another corner of the province, the deputy commissioner of Upper Chitral has proved that he had misused the law and tried to settle some scores with the social activist.
Secondly, in order to conceal its utter failure to rehabilitate the flood-affected people, the district administration was trying to suppress the voice of the people which would not be tolerated.
The protesters demanded that Pervez Lal should be set free and the arrest order against withdrawn forthwith.
They also demanded that higher authorities should take notice of the misuse of the law by the deputy commissioner.
