MAHTING (YARKHUN): Rain that started at 4pm on Monday continued without any interval in Yarkhun and other areas of Upper as well as Lower Chitral on Tuesday evening.
When this report was filed at 7pm on Tuesday, the rain was falling in Yarkhun and there were reports about collapse of houses in many areas of Upper Chitral.
In Mahting village, two rooms attached with the house of Babu Jan caved in along with a store for fodder.
Inmates of old houses without tin sheets are facing troubles as water has started leaking in. Besides, water has accumulated around many houses.
Though there is no major flash floods, the level of water in streams has increased, blocking roads in many areas. The rain has restricted people’s mobility between different villages while the main road to Chitral is blocked at Zait and Reshun due to flooding.
There are reports that the river is also cutting private land in south of Reshun towards the main Chitral-Mastuj road.
Many villages in Yarkhun were without electricity for over 24 hours after flooding in Grovur Gol.
The staffers operating the powerhouse in Grovur have closed the water channel to the powerhouse and left the area as water level in the stream increased and stones started falling from the adjacent mountains.
The other powerhouse at the same stream providing electricity to Brep and Dewangol villages is also closed.
Meanwhile, due to the continuous rain for over 24 hours people displaced due to the floods in Reshun and Bumburate and other areas suffered the most as they were staying in tents.
The affected people are waiting for rehabilitation but the rain is adding to their miseries.–Afzal Ali & Muhkam Uddin Ayuni
