BOONI: Representatives of political parties at a meeting here asked the deputy commissioner of Upper Chitral to withdraw his order to arrest social and political activist Pervez Lal under section 3 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
The meeting of the leaders of local chapters of political parties and Tehreek Huqooq-e-Awam was held to discuss the district administration’s Aug 8 order to send Pervez Lal to the Dera Ismail Khan jail for one month.
The DC’s order available with ChitralToday stated that Pervez Lal was allegedly involved in activities detrimental to peace of the area.
But sources told ChitralToday that the action was initiated against the activist after his speech criticizing the administration at Reshun during the chief minister’s visit to the flood-affected village.
Participants of the meeting told ChitralToday that the district administration mismanaged the visit of the chief minister and did not take local people on board and tried to keep the public away from him.
While the government failed to provide relief to the affected people, they were also not allowed to meet the chief minister and apprise him of their issues.
They said Pervez Lal had done nothing detrimental to peace of the area and the administration’s action has created more anger and resentment among the people, especially the youth.
They demanded that the district administration should withdraw the detention order issued against Pervez Lal.
Later, the participants informed the M. Irfanuddin, additional deputy commissioner of Upper Chitral, who promised to convey their concerns to the deputy commissioner and inform them about his reply by Thursday.
The participants said if they did not get any positive response from the DC, they would hold another meeting to devise a future strategy soon.
