Musharraf’s supporters in Chitral rally against his conviction
CHITRAL: A day after a special court in Islamabad sentenced former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf to death in the high treason case, a group of Musharraf’s supporters in Chitral held a rally against the verdict.
Musharraf’s supporters who took part in the protest included a few lawyers, representatives of taxi drivers, shopkeepers, former union council members belonging to Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) and retired army men.
Musharraf’s supporters said people of Chitral were shocked over the pronouncement of death sentence against Musharraf.
Musharraf is the benefactor of Chitral and included the backward area in the mainstream by constructing the Lowari tunnel, they added.
They said declaring the former president, who also served the nation in the army for 40 years, was totally unacceptable.
They also called upon the Supreme Court of Pakistan to provide justice to Musharraf by overruling the special court verdict.
The participants were also chanting slogans in support of the former military ruler as well as the army.
This is not a civilized way to protest and raise slogans against a judge. If the judge has given any wrong decision, take legal route and go to superior court for remedy. Flattery will not earn you any respect.
Musharaff initiated the lowari tunnel no doubt, but his underlying motive was to secure a constituency for himself in politics from the area. He was desperate to fight elections from Chitral in 2013 but was not allowed to do so by law.
In the last General elections he gave his Chitral’s NA ticket to a Punjabi who had no concern with Chitral but who’s only qualification was that he had money. When asked why did he not give the ticket to a Chitrali, Musharraf replied “I do not trust Chitralis”. Musharraf pleaded for the success of his candidate through video messages, but Chitralis did not listen to him (rightly so).
So much for ‘Mohsin e Chitral’ and his views about Chitralis and the spirit of sacrifice Chitralis have for him.
