PESHAWAR: People from Chitral held a protest demonstration outside Peshawar Press Club against proposed abolition of Chitral’s one provincial assembly seat.
The protest was organized by the business community of Chitral in Peshawar.
The protesters were carrying banners and placards and chanting slogans against the decision.
Addressing the protesters, leader of Chitrali business community Sadiq Amin said people of Chitral had been kept deprived of their basic rights for long.
The abolition of the assembly seat is yet another injustice with Chiral which will never be tolerated.
He said a distorted result had been shown about Chitral’s population in the 2017 census and on the basis of which the valley is being deprived of one of its two provincial assembly seats.
He said a majority of the people of Chitral live in other parts of the country as well as the world and due to the flaws in the census they were not counted as the residents of Chitral.
This resulted in Chitral having a population less than 0.5 million.
He said if the anomaly in the census results was accepted, Chitral will not only lose its seat but would also get even less share in the budgetary allocations.
The protesters asked the government to reconsider its decision and treat Chitral as a special case on the basis of its geographical size .
