CHITRAL, Jan 23: An Afghan national was injured when a mortar shell fired from across the border in Afghanistan landed on the bank of a stream in Arandu area of Chitral in the late hours of Wednesday.

A police official said the incident occurred in the bordering area of Kamsai, adjacent to Do Palam area of Afghanistan. He added an Afghan citizen was crossing the stream when the shell exploded near him, injuring him severely. After the incident, family members of the injured took him across the border to Afghanistan.

The official added Arandhu police along with Chitral Scouts increased patrolling in the area soon after. It may be noted that when the Taliban were drive out of Swat after the military operation in 2009, most of their leaders reached the eastern areas of Afghanistan, including the Kunar province.

They have been operating there since then and also infiltrated into the Arandu area a year later, killing over 40 Chitral Scouts personnel.

Security observers now fear that if the Pakistan Army launches an operation against the Taliban in their last stronghold of North Waziristan the security situation along the border in Chitral could become more precarious as the fleeing Taliban will be looking for a sanctuary in the Afghan areas.
