Musharraf formally arrested in Benazir murder case

ISLAMABAD, April 25: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday formally arrested Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case. Musharraf will remain at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse residence but will be produced at the anti-terrorist court in Rawalpindi on Friday. The FIA recorded his statement at his residence during which Musharraf said the case against him was politically motivated. Since his return to Pakistan in a bid to contest the 2013 general election, the former army strongman has been embroiled in a number of cases against him, ranging from judges’ detention to Benazir’s assassination to treason against the state. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city. The ATC had indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence.]]>
