  3. Each words has sound foundation with regard to Chitral but I differ with reference to Hindus and Sikh population that existed in our province. Saying that had Pakistan not been created Hindus and Sikhs would have made a hell of Muslims in NWFP is not right. Had this been the case, Muslims living in India after partition would have long been annihilated by Hindus and Sikhs. In fact there are more Muslims in India than all the population of today’s Pakistan.

  4. If the title of shaheed is given to the worst military dictator by the state, there is also no room for military adventurism. What people are facing today in Islamic republic of Pakistan is because of the worst dictator of all time. He does not deserve to be called a shaheed.

  5. Sir, you always write well because you know the art of writing being one of revered teachers and educationists. Yes, we know that section of the society which reluctantly accepted the creation of our beloved country and they are still in huge numbers in KPK. Partition was unavoidable and necessary to protect the rights of Muslims as you have rightly quoted; However, I humbly disagree with your version of the Bangladesh story.

This is not only you but many respected writers and opinion makers of your generation still think that the creation of Bangladesh was a tragedy. In my humble opinion it wasn’t as the sheer distance between Lahore and Dhaka or Karachi and Dhaka was so huge that it was illogical and impractical to run a govt. there. The combined population of East and West Pakistan in 1970 was approx. 129 million. If there wouldn’t have been a separation for them; today the total combined population of Pakistan would have been 363 million.

Pakistan didn’t have any direct route to Dhaka, either it had to use the Colombo route through sea or the Indian air space-which was not an option. So East Pakistan was never a natural part of Pakistan.

Although Quaid e Azam being a wise and rational leader of his time; made a big mistake by making East Bengal a province of Pakistan. It should have been a separate country from the very beginning.

But there is another thing which made me write this little piece here. You have refereed to a former dictator as Shaheed Zia. Do you really believe that a man as tyrant as Zia-the mastermind of making this country a mess, qualifies to be called a Shaheed?

    • You have the right to disagree with the revered writer, but I dare to humbly disagree with your points as well.
First of all, Bangladesh and Pakistan were lumped together during the post-colonial partition of India because both were Muslim dominated, and Pakistan was supposed to be a Muslim homeland. If, supposedly, Bangladesh was a mistake to be part of Pakistani government due to geographical inconvenience then Mr.Bhutto should have been shrewd enough to accept the six points of Bengalis. That would have been an easy solution to all the cultural and geographical differences rather than division of a newly born country into two parts.
Secondly, Zia-Ul-Haq has not been declared shaheed by the writer. He has been given the title of Shaheed Zia-ul-Haq by the Islamic Republic Of Pakistan and we, being the citizens, have to respect and follow that and that does not necessarily mean that we agree with his policies and dictatorship.
